So…this newsletter has not gotten off to the robust start that I was expecting, content-wise. I have two years worth of ideas in my notes file, but less than two years worth of time…much less.
So we’re pivoting a bit, at least for now. The new plan is to send out a newsletter with each new episode, briefly summarizing the episode and maybe giving a little behind-the-scenes, as appropriate. This will also give subscribers a place to comment on/ask questions about the episode, if they want. We’ll try this for a while and see how it goes.
TMATGL 81: This Is Possibly the Best Thing I've Ever Done
This episode was recorded live at the Amsterdam BrewHouse by the Lake in Toronto as part of the 2023 International Association for Great Lakes Research Conference. Our guest was Dr. Katie Stammler and we talked about HABs, gobies, and more. Plus a completely wrong Great Lakes Factoid that was nonetheless just perfect*. I’ll be honest: this was by far my favorite episode that we’ve recorded and is an excellent distillation of my vision for the show.
*Carolyn and I spend about 5 minutes cleaning this up in the beginning of episode 82 (out next week) and, since Carolyn is awesome, she turned it into something very Great Lakes-relevant.
This was the first live episode where weren’t also hosting (and paying for) a reception at the venue, so it was challenging to find a place that would let us record. The effort was worth it, though: we were on a second-floor patio overlooking the harbor and it was, despite some initial mayflies, really, really fun. About 40 people showed up, too, which was gratifying.
If you have a comment or question on the episode, I think you can use Substack’s commenting feature to respond to this post and I (and other subscribers) can see it. I might have even successfully embedded a link to comments right here:
If you haven’t heard the episode yet, you can find the links below or in your preferred podcast app.
As always, thanks for, um, reading and keep greating those lakes!

Incidentally, I don't know why the "Subscribe" buttons in that email say "pledge your support"...we don't want your money! One day, I'll figure out how to use this...
